The Problem

A 60-meter-high cable-stayed meteorological mast at a nuclear power facility in the United Arab Emirates required a comprehensive assessment of its structural integrity, stability, and long-term durability. The assessment included the steel tower, stay cables, concrete foundations, and associated structures.

As a critical component of the facility's health, safety, and environmental monitoring operations, the mast is subject to stringent regulatory requirements established by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), and UAE nuclear regulatory authorities. With more than 12 years of service, annual inspections were required to verify its continued functionality, structural integrity, and stability.

The Solution

WSP, the project's environmental consultant, engaged Vector Corrosion to conduct specialized structural assessments, nondestructive testing (NDT), and technical reporting. Working alongside tower specialists, Vector Corrosion evaluated the condition of the steel structure, stay cables, and concrete foundations.

The assessment included:

  • Visual inspection and corrosion condition assessment of the steel tower

  • Stay cable tension measurements to evaluate structural stability

  • Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) testing of concrete foundations

  • Acoustic inspection methods

  • Dry Film Thickness (DFT) Testing

  • Concrete foundation durability assessment

Due to the facility's stringent nuclear safety requirements and the challenges associated with working at height, all inspections and testing were conducted in accordance with applicable safety protocols using specialized equipment and qualified personnel.

The Result

Vector Corrosion completed the structural integrity and durability assessment and delivered a comprehensive technical report documenting the inspection and testing findings. The report included recommendations to support ongoing maintenance, operational safety, and the long-term structural integrity of the meteorological mast and its foundations.

The assessment provided the client with valuable information to support regulatory compliance, evaluate the condition of critical structural components, and make informed decisions regarding the facility's continued safe operation.
